Chapter One: the Origins of Language
1. Onomatopeia or bow-bow theory is the idea that speaking of
first human is perceived from imitation of nature.
2. Interjections such as Ah!, Ooh!, Phew , Wow!, or Yuck! are related
to pooh-pooh theory that is about the sounds humans make in
emotional situations.
3. The social interaction is about ya-he-hoo theory.
4. The b and m sounds are the most widely attested in vocalizations
made by human infants during their first year, no matter which
language their parents are using.
5. The human larynx or voice box (containing vocal cords and
vocal folds) differs in position from the larynx of other primates
like monkeys.

Chapter Eleven: Discourse Analysis
1. Discourse: language beyond the sentence.
2. Cohesion: the ties and connections between words that exist
within texts.
3. Cohesion ties: the individual connections between words and
phrases in a text.
4. Coherence: (“everything fitting together well ”) the connections
that readers and listeners create in their minds to arrive at a
meaningful interpretation of texts.
5. Conversation analysis: the study of turn-taking in conversation .
6. Completion point: in conversation, the end of a turn , usually
marked by a pause at the end of a phrase or sentence.
7. Turn: in conversation, the unit of talk by one speaker, ended by

Chapter Eighteen: Regional Variation in Language
1. Linguistic geography: the study of language variation based on
where different varieties of the language are used.
2. Standard language: the variety of language treated as the
official language and used in public broadcasting, publishing,
education.
3. Accent: aspects of pronunciation that identify where a speaker is
from, in contrast to dialect.
4. Dialect: aspects of grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation of a
