اصول و روش ترجمه ملانظر

Monosemy, Homonymy, Polysemy, and Synonymy

Monosemy: There are some words in a language which have only one referent, and one meaning or sense; such as: “melon”.

Homonymy: in the process of language development, some different words happened to have the same pronunciation (homophones: reed, read) or the same spelling (homographs: lead /led/, lead /li:d/), or both the same pronunciation and spelling (homonyms: lie (lie down), lie (tell a lie)) but different meanings; they’re not semantically related.

Polysemy: One word with different meanings.

Synonymy: One meaning with different words.

Primary Sense Vs Secondary Sense:

The primary sense of a word is the one:

1 – used most commonly in a language;

2 – usually learned before other senses;

3 – recalled by native speakers when heard in isolation, out of context;

4 – which occurs as the first meaning for an entry in a dictionary.

The other senses are referred to as secondary senses. Secondary senses are derived from the primary senses.
